Spain seems to have it all, fantastic weather, leading bridal wear designers and glorious settings. Getting married Spanish-style has become big business.

Getting married in Spain is big business in more ways than one. Spain is the second largest exporter of bridal wear in the world, and so has become a major trend-setter in the world of wedding fashion. With a high value still placed on marriage and family, Spaniards like to spend on their big day, which not only joins two people together, but the two families also.

Wedding customs vary across Spain with each different area and climate. In some places the bride offers her bouquet to the Virgin; in others it's given to a best friend, while in other regions it is thrown into the crowd. It is also common to throw rice, not confetti, over the bride and groom.

In Spanish weddings the groom doesn’t normally have a best man, he has a best woman – his mother! And she doesn't deliver an after-dinner speech!

Evening Weddings

In the south, summer weddings usually take place around 7 or 8 p.m. in the evening, after the oppressive heat of the day. After a short wedding ceremony it’s to a local restaurant for the set meal or buffet with plenty of wine that flows until the early hours until no guests are left !

Oficial wedding photographers are not always the norm, it's generally each guest with their camera and video – a free-for-all affair that can have everybody yelling directions together resulting in noisy chaos

Spanish Bridalwear Designers

The many famous Spanish designers of bridal wear have tempted many people to get married in Spain. For this reason many wedding companies are now available to organise all or part of the wedding ceremonies for foreign couples.

Every year frothy new creations take part in the dozens of wedding fairs that take place throughout Spain. Barcelona’s Novia Espana, which is held every summer, is the largest and most famous event with three days of catwalk shows modelling thousands of sparkling wedding gowns, shoes and accessories to an audience of more than 12,000 attendees.

Some of the more famous Spanish wedding dress designers are:

  • Pronovia – they also feature miniskirts for brides and trouser dresses.
  • Rosa Clara – 1930s inspirations with fitted bodices and flowing skirts.
  • Jesus Peiro - Oriental-inspired creations made from silk, satin and lace.
  • Lorenz Caprile – designed the wedding gown for King Juan Carlos' daughter, favouring crepe and organza.
  • Hannibal Laguna – mainly asymmetrical lines as favoured by Victoria Beckham.
  • Javier Larrainzer – likes plunging necklines with spaghetti-thin straps and strapless designs.
