Wedding Cake Trends of 2009Trendy or Traditional: Designer Cakes Make Perfect Edible DecorThe wedding cake is your reception topper, it sets the tone and mood of the wedding and should encompass both the bride and groom's taste.
Few elements of a wedding embody the personalities of the couple and their wedding guests as well as the wedding cake. The flavor, design, and extravagance levels can all signify personal touches that reflect not only the bride and groom’s taste but also what they think of their wedding guests. Some consider finding the perfect wedding cake as important as the right dress or colors.Whether brides and grooms are planning to opt for traditional or trendy, with modern wedding cakes, they can combine a little of both. Making Traditional Cakes ModernTraditional tiered cakes have not lost their popularity; the beauty and design options are endless, while the practicality of multiple flavors fills the different guests’ tastes.A modern twist on the tired cake has been to mix and match shapes. No longer are the tiered cakes limited to round or square, but these days brides are mixing and matching all shapes to achieve unique designs.According to the Wedding Channel, bold hues are also big for the cakes in 2009. The bright colors are not just for the dresses and flowers this year. Modern brides are embracing bright, bold colors when it comes to their wedding cakes. Choosing a Cake ThemeInspiration isn’t only coming from color either. Many brides are customizing their cake to their invitation or for especially talented bakers with a liking of fashion; some cakes can be designed to look similar to the wedding dress.Stacy Olerking, catering manager at a historic hotel in downtown Minneapolis, Minn., specializes in helping couple find their perfect cake for the perfect day. This year, Olerking said the trends are in all directions but especially in 2009, practicality is being met with economy. “The size of the cake needs to meet the size of the guest list. Let’s face it no one wants to throw money away,” Olerking says.Olerking adds some guests are opting out of wedding cake all together and choosing cookies or mini cakes that allow guests to pick their favorite flavor.“Couples really concerned about what their guests like, tend to find those options best,” she said. “But, the cake should be something both the bride and groom enjoy. After all, it is their day. ”Even the most modern or guest-conscience bride and groom should remember one tradition of wedding cake: Save that piece or pieces for after the first year. It’s a great way to re-live the special day on the first anniversary. Design Your Own Wedding CakeStill on the fence about what kind of cake to choose?
