You can transform an old metal pail into a great flower girl basket with minimal effort and extraordinary results.

Increasing brides want to put their own unique stamp of style on their weddings. They want things to be different and one of a kind. One way to ensure that is to go DIY and make some of your own wedding accessories.

Ring Bearer Pillows and Flower Girl Baskets are two of the most popular items for brides to make themselves.

This cute little flower girl pail is a great way to put your personality into your wedding accessories. If you find an old pail and reclaim it, it is also a great way to add a touch of green to your wedding by saving something old and reusing it.

Little tin pails can show up anywhere. They used to be quite popular. Now you can find them in thrift stores and at yard sales. If you want to go for the look but can’t find a pail you can always clean out a paint can and use it. The buckets or cans may be decorated in so many ways. It’s all up to your imagination and style. Make a pail funky and fun or sweet and romantic. Customize it to match your wedding theme and color scheme. It's all up to you.

This is a fabulously fun and eco-friendly craft for the green DIY bride.

Supplies Needed for Flower Girl Bucket

  • An old tin/metal pail with a handle
  • Fine grit sandpaper
  • Spray paint in your color choice
  • Clear coat spray to protect your creation (optional)
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  • glue sticks
  • Scissors

Green Options:

  • Consider using low VOC spray paint like Krylon’s H2O line

  • Look for all natural, recycled or biodegradable ribbon
Directions:

  • Select paint in your choice of color
  • Sand pail gently

  • Spray the paint on pail in a well ventilated area. It may need two or three coats to get good coverage
  • Let paint dry overnight
  • Clear coat the paint to protect it from scratching and chipping, let that dry overnight
  • Once the paint and clear coat have dried start decorating your pail
  • Cut out your ribbon at least an inch or two longer than you’ll actually need that way you have some play to work with when attaching it
  • Grab your glue gun and glue sticks and start attaching your ribbon just a little bit at a time or the glue will dry before you get there
  • Start by one handle and work all the way to the other handle -this way you never end up with a seam right in the front of your pail
  • When you get to the end match up your seams and cut off the excess before gluing the final strip down
When you're done you'll have a fun, stylish and completely unique flower girl basket perfect for your wedding. The flower girl is going to love carrying your crafty creation and you are going to love having a one of kind flower girl basket that you made yourself.
