Christmas weddings do not have to be decked out in red and green. With a little creativity, a holiday wedding can have its own unique look and feel.

Planning a wedding is stressful enough regardless of when the wedding will take place. But planning a Christmas wedding comes with its own unique set of challenges. Staying organized and leveraging all the holiday season has to offer will help any couple plan a beautiful Christmas wedding.

Christmas Wedding Colors

The obvious color choices that come to mind when planning a Christmas wedding are red and green. In fact, many of the wedding venues will already be decorated in these colors. But the bride and groom should not feel limited to only using red and green for their wedding.

As long as the Christmas decoration of the wedding and reception venue are not too invasive, there are several other color schemes that would work well for a Christmas wedding:

  • Silver and white
  • Royal blue and white
  • Ivory, forest green, and gold
  • Gold and ivory or cream
  • Royal blue and silver

Choosing a color palette for a Christmas wedding will largely depend how the wedding venues choose to decorate. Most wedding coordinators at the venue will be able to advise the couple as to what the venue traditionally uses for holiday decorations.

Christmas Wedding Invitations and Save-the-Date Cards

The holidays are a busy time of year for every family. Out of respect for the amount of coordinating and travel of the wedding guests, Christmas wedding save-the-date cards should be mailed earlier than most. It is a good idea to mail the save-the-dates at least eight-to-ten months in advance of the wedding. This will allow wedding guests enough time to plan for travel and accommodations.

When it comes to mailing invitations for a Christmas wedding, there are two primary considerations: how to reflect the theme and the feel of the Christmas wedding and how to make sure the wedding invitation doesn't get lost in the holiday card shuffle.

The wedding invitations should reflect the holiday theme of the wedding, but it also should avoid looking too much like a greeting card. Opting for a flat, one-piece invitation is a nice solution. Some ideas for the artwork of the Christmas invitation include:

  • Snowflakes
  • Poinsettia flowers
  • A border of holly
  • A simple border of the Christmas wedding colors
  • A drawing with holiday lights or ornaments

Christmas Wedding Flowers and Centerpieces

Holidays tend to drive up the prices of flowers, and that includes floral arrangements for a Christmas wedding. Additionally, the cool climate of many locations during the Christmas season makes it difficult to keep wedding flowers looking fresh and pretty.

Instead of choosing wedding flowers that are exotic, brides can incorporate the flowers of the Christmas season. White and red poinsettia flowers can make a beautiful, but interesting Christmas wedding bouquet. Incorporating evergreen pieces can be less expensive and more unique than traditional floral greens.

Because the wedding reception venue may already be decorated for the holidays, choosing Christmas wedding centerpieces may not be necessary. However, centerpiece ideas for a Christmas wedding are easy to come by:

  • A potted poinsettia flower for each table, with the pot wrapped in a foil that matches the Christmas wedding colors. Encourage guests to take them home at the end of the evening.
  • Pillar candles atop a simple mirror add ambiance and warmth to a cool holiday night.
  • Evergreen wreaths laid a top a table, with a photo of the bride and groom in the center.
  • Scatter fake snow through the center of the table, with candles lined up in a row.

Planning a Christmas wedding requires the bride and groom to stay organized and ahead of the planning schedule. By starting early, the couple can be well prepared for the challenges that come with a holiday wedding.
