What's on top of the cake? Monogram cake toppers add personalized style and flair to any type of wedding cake... as well as being used on birthday and anniversary cakes

Not every wedding cake has a topper, but for those that do, these cake decorations draw attention and add flair. The classic cake topper is figures of the bride and groom, but unique designs of all shapes and descriptions are widely available. One of the most elegant and popular choices for wedding cake toppers is a monogram of the bride and groom's initials.

The Couple's Monogram

The traditional monogram combines the initials of the bride's first name, the groom's last name, and the groom's first name, in that order. For instance, if Scarlett O'Hara marries Rhett Butler, the initials on the cake would be "SBR." The last name initial may be the same size as the other letters, or it may be larger.

If the bride intends to keep her last name, it's simplest to omit the last name initial entirely and use only the couple's first names - with a heart or an ampersand ("&") in between the two letters.

Materials & Designs for Monogram Cake Toppers

Monogram cake toppers come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. Some of the options include:

  • Silver – Solid silver letters are a simple and elegant choice for wedding cake toppers, and can be found in a variety of fonts or script styles.
  • Aluminum – These toppers have the visual appeal of silver but are less durable and easier on the budget.
  • Acrylic – The most common monogram cake toppers are acrylic or plastic, often plated with silver or gold or embellished with paint, airbrushed designs, or rhinestones. The widest variety of choices are available in acrylic.
  • Cut Glass – Glass makes beautiful cake decorations, usually with engraved letters carved into a clear, smooth surface.
  • Rhinestone or Crystal Settings – Rhinestones (in cheaper cake toppers) and genuine crystal (in more expensive ones) add sparkle to the wedding cake for a glittering, elegant finish.

Most monogram letter cake toppers have picks at the base, making it easy to stick them into the cake – or use the letters in floral arrangements, table centerpieces, or other wedding decorations.

Monogram Cake Toppers for Birthdays & Anniversaries

Monogram cake toppers aren't limited to weddings – they're perfect for cake decorating at birthdays, anniversaries, and more.

For a child's birthday party or a sweet sixteen, use the birthday girl's (or boy's) full initials. For an anniversary party, the husband and wife's initials make an elegant touch, or use the number of the anniversary to top the cake. Whatever the event, letter cake toppers are an elegant way to highlight a special person or special couple.
