Looking for a fun alternative to boring picture frames and time-consuming scrapbooking? Consider this DIY wedding shadowbox project.

Every bride wants the memories of her big day to last a lifetime. By crafting a shadowbox, you can dispay your favorite and most meaningful mementos of your special day. Best of all, this project is easy and does not require a lot of time or any special skills.

What is a Shadowbox?

A shadowbox is a cork board framed in glass that you can display hanging on a wall or self-standing like a picture frame. You can incorporate a collage of photos and other mementos in an elegant and personalized way.

Planning Your Wedding Shadowbox Project

Start collecting items that have significance to you. Your shadowbox can be as involved or as simple as you like. A favorite wedding photo, an extra invitation, a reading or poem from your ceremony or even your garter are fun ideas to consider. You should take into consideration the size of the shadowbox you will be using when determining how many different keepsakes you will include; using too many items in too small a box will look cluttered.

How To Make Your Own Wedding Shadowbox

Once you have collected the tokens and photos you wish to include in your shadowbox, and you have a general idea of how you want it to look, you can begin creating it.

Supplies:

  • grouping of photots and mementos
  • a shadowbox (can be purchased at any arts and crafts or home decorating store)
  • push pins
  • plain or designed paper for the background (scrapbook paper works well; so does wrapping paper)

Instructions:

  1. Arrange the background paper for your shadowbox. Cut paper to fit and tack onto the shadowbox board.
  2. Arrange the items on shadowbox as desired. Make sure you are pleased with the layout and then tack them onto the board.
  3. (optional) If you like, you can paint the frame of your shadowbox to correspond with the theme or color scheme of your wedding.

Tips:

  • If simple is the style you are going for, a great idea is to choose one photo that you like and one corresponding memento. For a background, choose a solid-color paper and overlay it with vellum wedding sayings.
  • If you are including a large collage of items in your shadowbox, keep your background as simple as possible. Plain white, ivory, pale pink or blue are great choices; then focus attention on the objects as a whole.
  • Some more ideas for things to include in your shadowbox arrangement include your cake topper, your dried bouqet, extra wedding favors or leftover wedding stationery like "save the date" cards or wedding announcements.
  • Think about making a honeymoon shadowbox as well. This will give you incentive to keep mementos from your honeymoon.
